Nan Turismo is a game me and 5 other UCLAN students worked on at EGX London 2019.

We had 2 and a half days to make a game on the theme "sports that's couldn't exist".

I was in charge of lead level design, music and sound effects while also helping out with some of the mechanic design.

Nan Turismo is a 4 player split screen racing game/shooter where the winner is whoever deals the most damage while taking the least amount.

Race in a death centre of mayhem after customising your ride, type of Nan, weaponry and melee weapon.
After everything is ready, drop into the most chaotic fun you'll have involving weapons of mass destruction and old people.

Role

This project was mode over the course of the EGX London 2019 Game jam, me and 5 other students made the game.

During this project my roles in the project were the following:

  • Level design

  • Game Design

  • Assisted with Mechanic design

  • Sound Design

Game Mechanics

The aim of Nan Turismo was to create a 4 player couch co-op shooter.

Not many games like this are made now a days and we wanted to make a fun experience with a comedic edge.

The goal of the game is to deal as much damage is you possibly can to everyone in the arena whilst taking the least amount of damage!

Before the game starts you can change a few weapons and cosmetics, you can change the appearance of your Nan, their melee weapon, ranged weapon and type of cart.

  • Each Nan has the following mechanics:

  • Turbo boost which gives the player a huge speed boost projecting them forward and dealing damage to any players hit in their path.

  • Ranged attack, this can vary from weapon to weapon, we have machine guns, rocket launchers, pistols and grenade launchers.

  • Melee attack, all melee weapons deal the same damage and attack at the same speed, the difference from weapon to weapon is purely cosmetic.

  • Drift, this allows the player to do power slides and draft around corners easily.

EGX Live!

After finishing our game jam and competing against 6+ other universities across the country, we had to go on stage and present the game live on Twitch.

It was an honour to present the game with team member Lewis Wright for our team, and was truly an unforgettable experience.

The Great Northern Creative Expo 2019 winners!

After returning from EGX London 2019, we were nominated by the University of Central Lancashire for The Great Northern Creative Expo award.

The fantastic news is for our efforts as a team and our game down at EGX we ended up winning.

Massive congratulations to all other nominees, but we couldn't be happier to take home first place as a team and was a brilliant moment for us all.

The Aftermath

After EGX London, we all got invited to visit Manchester Gamer's Unite to showcase our project.

This was a fantastic opportunity to meet lots of people in the industry and also show off our game a little bit more.

Some of the team went on to make a small university group called "LunchBoxGames", I assisted with level designs for a while before deciding to leave and focus more on my own personal work.
