Roast boy & Carvery girl is an isometric game similar to Lego games, crash bandicoot clash of the titans and more.

You play as Roast boy & Carvery girl as you embark on an epic quest to restore order to the fast food chains around the world.

Fight back the evil corporations of healthy eating and restore order to the carvery restaurants.

I worked on this a duo project with a fellow 3D modeller Alex Keates, he did the blueprints and models while I did the level design and helped with many more aspects.

I was set the task to make 3 levels themed around Texas.

You set off on the adventure to destroy a great grease factory that is blocking residents from visiting their favourite Rib House, this cannot go on any longer.

Take up arms with two incredibly unique characters who fight their way past all reason and common sense to restore the rib house to its former glory.

Role

Roast Boy & Carvery Girl was a 1 semester project that I did with a fellow student Alex Keates.

My job through the project was to design 3 Texas themed levels my creative freedom was limited to the tool given to me for the task.

My roles were the following:

  • Level Design for 3 of the games levels

  • Game Design 

  • Playtesting

  • Bug fixing

Game Mechanics

In the game you play as 1 of 2 characters, each with their own unique skill set and abilities to impact the levels.

Each character has a basic attack which every 3rd consistent attack does an empowered version.

They both have an ultimate ability which refreshes roughly every 10 seconds, and both characters have 3 cubes of health, this can be refreshed by picking up blocks of food on the floor.

If a character is to go down, they can be revived by one player going up to them and reviving them, or if they're separated, by picking up food.

Roast Boy:

  • A strong melee fighter focused on pummelling enemies.

  • His ultimate ability causes a shock wave to be sent forward dealing massive damage to all enemies in its path.

  • Can pick up Carvery girl to lift her up to higher locations.

  • Can move large blocks of Tofu that Carvery girl cannot.

  • Can pick up Carvery girl and carry her across grease cannon locations.

Carvery Girl:

  • A quick an nimble ranged character.

  • Her ultimate ability throws knifes out all around her dealing damage to anything hit.

  • Can be given access to locations by having roast boy throw her up.

  • Can defeat enemies in locations roast boy cannot reach.

Level 1 - The great grease valley

Enemy types

Throughout the 3 levels set in Texas, Roast boy and carvery girl will encounter these enemy types!

  • Daikon – A base melee unit that has small health and deals minor damage.

  • Lethal lettuce – A ranged unit with a large health pool and deals heavy damage, his attacks are slow and easy to dodge but when paired up with other ranged units and melee units it slowly becomes difficult!

    When he shoots slices of himself at the enemy, this also slowly does damage to himself

  • Carrot – a ranged unit that shoots pieces of himself at the enemy in a hockey puck style.

Pickups

  • Food – heals partner

  • Tofu – a movable block of tofu

Intractable items

  • Leaver

  • Throw pad, roast boy throws carvery girl up or across to a destination

Camera

The camera is fixed in an isometric view port, it is always facing north and never changes.
